Dancing

“It may be possible to do without dancing entirely. Instances have been known of young people passing many, many months successively without being at any ball of any description, and no material injury accrue either to body or mind; but when a beginning is made -- when the felicities of rapid motion have once been, though slightly, felt -- it must be a very heavy set that does not ask for more.” ~Jane Austen

Jane has a very good point here. I love dancing. Period.

I definitely love 'Real Dancing' the best-when you actually touch each other and move in graceful harmony to the strains of beautiful music, while the guy leads the girl, etc., etc. However, I spent the other night dancing to what I would call the 'non-real' type of dancing-where you're simply feeling the "felicities of rapid motion," along with a ton of other people on the crowded dance floor.

But that Jane Austen quote caught my eye, because I think it sums up why people dance. There's something intoxicating in any form of music. People talk about music being "fun to dance to," and I think that means that they feel the magic of the music.

I think we're all agreed that swing dancing, ballroom dance, and line dancing is much more fun than just 'jamming out.' But, as long as the music is nice, I do enjoy letting loose on the dance floor.
How about you? :)

  1. I know how you feel about real dancing versus not real dancing, as I feel the same way. I can't enjoy dancing half as much unless the guy has the skill to lead the girl and she has the know-how to follow. The dancing done over the weekend, although simplistic and often having female to female partners (very upsetting) was enjoyable in the sense that it gave me a chance to move in cadence with someone else. Yeah, I don't get to do a lot of coordinated dance.

I love to dance, but in fact I love to move my whole body. I struggle though with dancing for myself and for others to the best of my ability when I don't always dance to the best of my ability for God. From my standpoint, the thing that keeps me back from dancing swing and jazz is my lack of dancing for God.

Perhaps that goes above all of your heads, but that's how it is for me.

    Interesting thoughts,

  2. Very interesting perspective, De Facto.

Addie, I completely agree with you. There is no poetry in "dancing" that is simply body gyration. It does not have any dignity, it does not glorify God's creation in any way. Real dancing has a splendid grace and elegance that shows the movements of the human body to their best advantage. What is more lovely than seeing a couple dancing in perfect harmony with one another?

  3. Great post Addie! Sorry I hadn't commented until now! This past week was crazy homework-wise. But it's over now! Anyway.

Yup, I totally prefer 'real' dancing. Though today I was jammin' a bit in my bro's room and it was pretty fun...hehe.

De Facto--Well in the girls' defense, y'all didn't ASK them to dance. ;) And in my own defense...um...I was trying to dance with anyone who wanted me too...and also trying to be a good hostess with those people who weren't dancing...so.........

Hmm...so would you say that swing dancing can't be done for God, or just that when you do it it doesn't tend to be for Him? Just curious.
